I have a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro, and Windows Task Manager shows the drive at or near 100% active time during normal use. Programs open slowly, and even dragging windows around can cause the disk activity to spike. Games still run normally, but the system feels sluggish.
Samsung Magician reports roughly 7,384 MB/s sequential read speed but only 479 MB/s sequential write speed. Random performance is 1,198,730 IOPS read and 107,666 IOPS write. The drive has about 454 GB free out of 885 GB shown on the C: drive.

The write result is much lower than expected for a healthy 990 Pro. As a comparison, another 2TB NVMe drive in a similar system can reach around 5,000 MB/s sequential writes, so 479 MB/s is suspicious if the test conditions are comparable. Make sure the benchmark is using the correct drive, the SSD isn’t nearly full, and the test isn’t running while Windows is doing heavy background work.
Run a benchmark from a bootable diagnostic environment or another independent drive-testing tool. That helps separate a Windows/background-process problem from an SSD, firmware, or thermal issue. Also check the 990 Pro’s health, temperature, firmware version, and SMART data. If the drive is overheating or reporting warnings, address that before replacing it.
The motherboard and slot layout matter here. Your B650 board’s CPU-connected M.2 slot should be capable of the drive’s full PCIe speed, but check in BIOS or Samsung Magician that the link is negotiating at the expected generation and that the SSD is seated properly. Other PCIe or M.2 devices can sometimes share lanes on certain boards, although your described setup doesn’t immediately sound like a lane-sharing problem.
First check Resource Monitor rather than relying only on the active-time percentage in Task Manager. The disk could be saturated by a background process, indexing, antivirus, updates, or paging even if the transfer rate looks low. Resource Monitor can show which process is generating the reads and writes.
