Why won’t my DDR4 RAM sticks fully click into place?

I bought two additional DDR4 memory sticks for an older computer and want to use all four motherboard slots. The existing RAM is from a different brand, but I understood that mixing brands is usually fine as long as the memory is compatible. This is my first time installing RAM, and the new sticks only seem to go halfway into the slots—one side appears to make contact while the other side does not. I opened the slot clips and tried aligning the modules, but I'm worried about forcing them or installing them incorrectly. What should I check before continuing?

First, make sure the notch in the RAM’s contacts lines up exactly with the raised key in the motherboard slot. The module is not symmetrical, so it can only be installed in one direction. Once aligned, press firmly and evenly on both ends until the retaining clips snap into place. RAM often takes more force than beginners expect, but never force it if the notch is not aligned.

Confirm that your motherboard actually supports DDR4. Memory types are not interchangeable, even if the processor itself can be used with different generations on different boards. Also check the motherboard manual for the supported capacity and slot configuration.

Mixing brands can work, but the modules may run at the slowest stick’s speed and different kits can sometimes cause stability problems. Check that all four sticks have compatible voltage, capacity, and speed settings. If the computer fails to boot, test the new modules by themselves first, then add the old ones back.
