I have a B550 Aorus Elite V2 motherboard, a Ryzen 5 5600X, and 2×16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3600 memory. When I enable XMP and select 3600 in the BIOS, the system boots with the RAM falling back to 2666. The fastest stable setting I've managed is 3200. The PC has been in use since around 2022. Is there a reason 3600 won't work, and are there any safe settings or steps I can try? My current BIOS is F19, while F20a is the newer beta release.

Make sure you’re interpreting the frequency correctly. DDR memory transfers data twice per clock, so software such as CPU-Z may show about 1800 MHz for DDR4-3600, while the advertised effective speed is 3600 MT/s. Check the Memory tab in CPU-Z rather than relying only on the BIOS label or Task Manager. If it really is running at 3200 MT/s, that’s still a perfectly reasonable result.
Try checking for a newer stable BIOS first, since memory compatibility and Ryzen training can improve with BIOS updates. That said, if 3200 is stable while 3600 fails, the limitation may be the individual CPU’s memory controller rather than the RAM itself. You can try manually setting 3600, increasing DRAM voltage to the kit’s rated value, and using an appropriate Infinity Fabric setting, but stability-test everything afterward.
The only newer version I found is F20a, and it’s still marked as beta, so I’m hesitant to install it unless there’s a good reason.
Not every Ryzen 5000 chip can reliably run every memory kit at its advertised speed, even when the motherboard and RAM support it. Two DIMMs at 3600 is usually achievable on a 5600X, but the memory controller quality varies between CPUs. Updating to a stable BIOS, using the correct XMP/DOCP profile, and checking that the modules are installed in the recommended paired slots are good first steps. If 3600 still fails, 3200 with tight timings may perform nearly as well and is better than an unstable overclock.
I checked with both CPU-Z and Task Manager, and it does appear to be running at 3200. The system is stable, but it would have been nice to get the extra performance from the rated 3600 setting.
