Why won’t my Ryzen 5600X run DDR4-3600 with XMP?

I have been using this PC since around 2022, and I'm trying to run my 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3600 kit at its advertised speed. My system has a Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite V2 rev. 1.0 motherboard, a Ryzen 5 5600X, an RTX 3060 12GB, a WD SN570 NVMe drive, and a 750W 80+ Bronze power supply. When I enable XMP and select 3600 in the BIOS, the system starts with the memory running at 2666 instead. The fastest stable setting I've managed is 3200. Why might this be happening, and is there anything I can do to reach DDR4-3600? The BIOS is currently version F19; the newer F20a version is listed as beta.

Check the actual memory clock with CPU-Z rather than relying only on the BIOS or Task Manager. DDR memory transfers data twice per clock, so CPU-Z may show roughly 1800 MHz when the effective speed is DDR4-3600. If the system really is falling back to 2666 or 3200, the limitation may be the individual CPU’s memory controller, the motherboard training settings, or the particular RAM kit. Not every Ryzen 5000 chip can run every kit at 3600 effortlessly.

I checked with both CPU-Z and Task Manager, so it does appear to be running below the advertised setting. The PC is stable at 3200, but it would have been nice to get the extra performance from the 3600 kit.

A BIOS update may improve memory compatibility on this platform. Some similar AM4 systems became stable above 3200 after updating, although the newest version for your board is beta, so it’s reasonable to avoid it unless you’re comfortable testing it.

My board is already on F19, and F20a is the latest beta release. I usually prefer not to install beta BIOS versions unless there’s a strong reason.

The RAM label is using effective transfer rate rather than the physical memory clock. DDR4-3600 normally runs at an actual 1800 MHz clock, while 3200 corresponds to 1600 MHz. In practice, the performance difference between 3200 and 3600 on a Ryzen 5600X is fairly small. You can try manually setting 3600, the correct DRAM voltage from the kit label, and suitable primary timings, but if it fails memory training or reverts to a lower speed, 3200 is a perfectly reasonable stable setting.
