Will 2×32 GB and 2×16 GB DDR4-3200 Kits Run Reliably Together on a Ryzen 9 5950X?

I currently have a 64 GB kit made up of two 32 GB Patriot Viper Steel DDR4-3200 CL16 modules (PVS464G320C6K). I'm considering adding a separate 32 GB kit consisting of two 16 GB Patriot Viper Steel DDR4-3200 CL16 modules (PVS432G320C6K), giving me 96 GB across all four DIMM slots.

The system uses a Ryzen 9 5950X and an ASUS ROG STRIX B550-A GAMING motherboard. Since both kits are rated for DDR4-3200 CL16, is it reasonably likely that all four modules will run reliably at 3200 MT/s with DOCP/XMP enabled? I'd prefer adding the smaller kit rather than replacing my existing memory with a matched 4×32 GB kit or another 2×32 GB kit. What should I expect in terms of compatibility, reduced speeds, and stability testing?

Be prepared for the system to fall back to conservative JEDEC settings, such as 2133 or 2666 MT/s, if the automatic profile is unstable. You can try 3200 first, then reduce the speed if necessary. Stability is more important than keeping the advertised profile, especially with four mixed modules.

The safest option is a single matched kit designed for the capacity and number of DIMMs you want. Mixing kits can work successfully, but it is not guaranteed even when the model family, speed, and CL rating are the same. A matched 4×32 GB kit or another validated configuration would provide better certainty, while the 2×32 GB plus 2×16 GB approach is mainly a cost-saving gamble.

If you try it, buy from somewhere with a good return policy. Mixing the kits shouldn’t damage the hardware, but the outcome is unpredictable: it may run at 3200, need a lower memory speed, or fail to train or boot with DOCP enabled. Test it thoroughly with memory-intensive tools and normal workloads before relying on the 96 GB configuration.

The matching advertised speed and timings are encouraging, but they don’t guarantee that the kits will work together at 3200 MT/s. Separate kits may use different memory chips or subtimings, and four DIMMs place more stress on the Ryzen memory controller. It might boot and run perfectly, but it could also require lower settings or manual voltage and timing adjustments.
