I mainly play demanding single-player games at 1440p and occasionally play competitive titles such as League of Legends and Dota 2. My current system is on AM4 with a Ryzen 5 5600G and 16GB of 2400MHz memory, so I'm considering upgrading gradually to 32GB of around 3400MHz DDR4. My monitor runs at 1440p and 240Hz.
I can get a Ryzen 5 5500X3D for about $185 locally. A Ryzen 7 5800X3D would cost roughly $380, while moving to AM5 would also require new memory and a motherboard. I'm not chasing the absolute highest performance, but I don't want the upgrade to feel inadequate. Would the 5500X3D significantly bottleneck an RX 9070 XT, especially in CPU-heavy games or at high refresh rates?

Before buying faster DDR4, compare the total cost with moving to AM5. A budget AM5 setup built around a 7500F or similar chip and a reasonably priced B650 board may offer a better upgrade path, especially if you can sell your current CPU, motherboard, and memory. That said, if you want the least expensive drop-in upgrade, the 5500X3D at $185 is a sensible option.
The 5800X3D probably isn’t worth paying around twice as much for in this situation. The 5500X3D should deliver a much better experience than your current processor, though the old 2400MHz memory is also holding the system back. Upgrade to 32GB of faster DDR4 when practical, and judge performance using GPU usage and frame-time data rather than the word “bottleneck” alone.
At 1440p, especially with high or maximum settings, the 5500X3D should pair reasonably well with the 9070 XT. The GPU usually becomes the limiting factor at that resolution, and the extra cache should help a lot in CPU-sensitive games compared with your 5600G. You may still see a CPU limit in esports titles or when lowering settings to chase very high frame rates, but that doesn’t make the combination unusable.
There isn’t a simple yes-or-no answer. Competitive games at low settings and very high FPS can bottleneck on the CPU, while demanding single-player games at 1440p will generally lean much more on the graphics card. League of Legends and similar games should run extremely well, and the 5500X3D is a substantial upgrade from the 5600G for gaming.
Used DDR5 can narrow the price gap, and newer AM5 X3D chips can outperform the older AM4 options while giving you room to upgrade later. It’s worth checking local deals before committing.
