I'm building a roughly $2,000 gaming PC and am deciding between a Gigabyte Gaming OC ICE RX 9070 XT for $750 and an XFX Swift RX 9070 GRE for about $555. I understand the differences in VRAM, performance, and power consumption, but I'm mainly worried that the Ryzen 5 7600X3D I'm planning to buy for $240 won't be powerful enough for the 9070 XT. Many XT builds pair it with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but upgrading the CPU would push the build beyond my budget. I'll be gaming at 1440p. Would the 7600X3D significantly limit the 9070 XT, or would the 9070 GRE be a better match?

A standard RX 9070 could be a useful middle ground. It offers 16GB of VRAM, lower power consumption, and performance between the two options while costing less than the XT. However, if you can comfortably save money elsewhere and the additional $100 fits your budget, the XT is the better performance option.
The 7600X3D is already a very fast gaming CPU. Unless you’re playing at 1080p with low settings and chasing extremely high frame rates, you probably won’t run into a meaningful CPU bottleneck. The GRE is a cut-down card and doesn’t seem like a great value much above $500; at that point, the RX 9070 or 9070 XT may make more sense.
I didn’t realize the GRE performed so similarly to an RX 7800 XT. That makes its pricing harder to justify.
I’m running an RX 9070 XT with a Ryzen 5 5500X3D at 1440p and haven’t noticed any obvious bottlenecking. The 7600X3D is at least as capable for gaming, so it should be a solid match.
That’s exactly the kind of confirmation I was looking for. I’m going with the XT.
Don’t worry too much about avoiding bottlenecks entirely because the limiting component changes depending on the game, settings, and resolution. If the CPU is limiting performance, increasing graphical settings can shift more work to the GPU; if the GPU is limiting performance, lowering settings or resolution can help. There are also occasional deals on faster X3D processors, but I wouldn’t stretch the budget just to avoid a theoretical bottleneck.
The 7600X3D should pair just fine with the 9070 XT, especially at 1440p. In most games at that resolution, the GPU will be the limiting component rather than the CPU. Generally, it makes more sense to buy the strongest graphics card that fits your budget instead of spending over $100 on a CPU upgrade.
I’ll be playing at 1440p. I initially thought the GRE would struggle there, but after looking at some benchmarks, it seems reasonably capable.

That was my original thought, but I’d rather put the extra money toward the XT and cut back on less important parts, such as decorative fans.
