I'm upgrading my motherboard and bought an ASRock B860 WiFi 7, but my Intel Core i7 from a few years ago doesn't fit the socket properly. The socket appears to be longer or otherwise different from the one on my old board. I didn't force the retention mechanism closed, but I'm unsure whether the processor or motherboard is compatible. Can I use this CPU with the new board, or do I need to return something and replace it?

If you keep the B860 board, you’ll need a compatible LGA1851 processor. Check the memory requirements too, since this platform uses newer DDR5 memory and your existing RAM may not carry over. You may also need to verify that your cooler and power supply are suitable.
The B860 board uses Intel’s LGA1851 socket, which is intended for much newer Core Ultra processors. Your older i7 uses a different socket and won’t work in this motherboard. The safest option is to return the board and choose one that matches your CPU, unless you’re ready to replace the CPU as well.
Don’t try to force the CPU into place. LGA sockets have delicate pins, and pressing down on an incorrectly matched processor can bend or damage them. Since you stopped before closing the socket, inspect the pins carefully under good lighting, but returning the incompatible motherboard is probably the simplest solution.
I didn’t force the latch closed, so I’ll inspect the socket and probably return the board. I may replace the CPU later instead of trying to make this setup work.
