I'm new to PCs and recently bought a prebuilt system with a single 16GB RAM module installed. I'd like to add another 16GB stick for 32GB total. My current module is a Samsung M425R2GA3EB0-CWMQOL, and I'm considering a Kingston KVR56S46BS8-16. They appear to have similar specifications, but they're different brands. Will the Kingston module fit and work properly with the Samsung one, or should I buy a matched pair?

You don’t necessarily have to avoid mixing RAM completely. Check the full specifications with a tool such as HWiNFO or CPU-Z, especially the DDR5 SO-DIMM type, speed, timings, rank, and voltage. If those match closely, the Kingston module has a reasonable chance of working, but a matched kit is still the more reliable choice.
Another practical choice is to buy a matched 2x16GB kit and replace the existing Samsung module. You could keep the original stick as a spare or sell it. That avoids compatibility guesswork and gives you the best chance of running the memory in dual-channel mode at its advertised settings.
The safest option is to use two matching modules, ideally another Samsung stick with the same part number or a 2-stick kit. Mixing brands can work when the capacity, DDR generation, speed, voltage, and timings match, but it isn’t guaranteed and the system may run both sticks at a lower speed or have stability problems.

I’m very new to this, so I’m not sure how to compare all those timings and specifications. Would buying two matching sticks be the simplest option?
