I built a small PC about three years ago using a white Corsair case, but the case has yellowed badly from humidity. I'm considering moving the system into a full-size ATX case and may replace the current motherboard with another AM4 board. If I move my existing SSD to the new motherboard, will Windows and my files work normally, or should I plan on doing a fresh installation? I'd appreciate guidance on the safest way to handle the swap.

The SSD will usually boot after being moved to a different motherboard, but Windows may need to install new chipset, network, audio, and other drivers. Back up anything important first. If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, save the recovery key and preferably disable encryption before the hardware change. You may also need to reactivate Windows, especially if the license is tied to the old motherboard. If Windows cannot repair or boot properly, a clean installation is the fallback.
Before replacing the motherboard, check whether you actually need to. A micro-ATX board will fit perfectly in a standard ATX case, using the appropriate mounting points. You may only need a new case, and keeping the existing board avoids most Windows activation and driver complications. Just make sure the new case supports the motherboard size and that you have the correct standoffs and rear I/O shield.
I wasn’t sure about the mounting points since I discarded the spare parts. I’ll check the case manual and confirm the board size before buying a replacement motherboard.
If you do replace the board, prepare for Windows to treat it as a major hardware change. A retail license can generally be transferred through your Microsoft account, while an OEM license may remain tied to the original motherboard. Have your Windows activation details available, download the new motherboard drivers in advance if possible, and keep the old setup intact until you know the new one works.
