Windows 11 laptop screen is flashing and showing visual glitches—hardware or software?

My Windows 11 laptop worked normally for a long time, but recently the display started glitching. The left side sometimes flashes white, and on one occasion the entire screen blinked very rapidly. I'm unsure whether this is caused by malware, graphics drivers, or failing hardware. The laptop still works well otherwise, so I'd prefer to repair it rather than replace it. What should I test first?

This sounds more like a display or graphics problem than malware. A damaged screen cable, failing LCD panel, graphics chip, or buggy graphics driver could all cause it. Try updating or reinstalling the graphics driver, and check whether the problem also appears in the BIOS or before Windows loads. If it does, that points strongly to hardware.

Connect the laptop to a second monitor or TV and mirror the display. If the external screen looks normal while the laptop panel continues flashing, the internal LCD panel or its connecting cable is probably failing. If both screens show the same glitch, investigate the graphics hardware or software instead.

The location of the problem is a useful clue. Glitches limited mostly to the left side often indicate the panel or display cable rather than an infection. Carefully changing the screen angle can sometimes reveal a loose or damaged cable, but avoid forcing it. Back up important files before troubleshooting or opening the laptop.
