I've been trying for several days to delete a file from my Downloads folder. It started as an ordinary Tumblr image, but I also have an intact copy in another folder, so this particular file seems to be corrupted or behaving differently. Windows says the file doesn't exist or is no longer located in Downloads, yet its entry remains visible. I can't delete it, rename it, copy it, or move it. Shift+Delete, several Command Prompt deletion commands, changing permissions, and Unlocker have all failed. I'm using a Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 15IAN8 running Windows 11. What's the safest way to remove this phantom file?

Try clearing Windows’ temporary files and then restart the laptop. Open the Run dialog with Win+R, enter %temp%, and delete what Windows allows you to delete. You can also use Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files. After restarting, check whether the stale Downloads entry is gone.
Install or use 7-Zip’s File Manager and browse to the Downloads folder from inside it. Try renaming the file there first, then delete it. File managers sometimes handle stale or unusually named entries better than File Explorer. If that still fails, restarting Windows and trying again may clear the outdated directory entry.
I wasn’t sure what “temporary folder” meant, but I’ll try the %temp% folder and the Storage settings before restarting.
