I have an older laptop with an NVIDIA MX250 and 2 GB of VRAM, along with limited RAM. It currently gives me playable performance in games like Crusader Kings 3, Skyrim, Hitman 3, Just Cause 3, Euro Truck Simulator 2, and Stardew Valley. I'm considering switching from Windows 11 to Linux because it might use fewer system resources, but I'm completely new to Linux and worried about breaking the laptop or losing my current setup. Would Linux help, and what are the main advantages, drawbacks, and precautions?

If you want to experiment, back up your important files and use a dual-boot setup rather than deleting Windows immediately. Make a bootable USB installer, confirm the laptop can boot from it, and keep Windows recovery media available. A beginner-friendly distribution such as Mint is probably less overwhelming than jumping straight into an advanced Arch-based system.
For gaming, Windows may actually perform better on this hardware. Older NVIDIA cards and newer Linux drivers or compatibility layers can have issues, and some games may not work at all. Linux could reduce background resource usage, but that does not automatically translate into higher frame rates. If Windows already runs your games acceptably, switching solely for performance is risky.
Linux may make the desktop feel lighter, especially with something like Linux Mint XFCE or KDE, but don’t expect a guaranteed improvement in gaming performance. NVIDIA laptops can be complicated because of hybrid graphics, and some games may run worse or require extra setup. Check each game on ProtonDB before switching, and consider trying Linux from a USB drive first.
I’m still learning what distributions and Proton mean, but trying it from a USB before installing sounds safer.
Your MX250 should generally have Linux driver support, but older Optimus laptops can take some troubleshooting. Start with a live USB session to test Wi-Fi, sound, the display, and graphics switching. If you install Linux, use a lightweight desktop and expect to spend some time learning. It can make the system feel smoother for everyday use, but it probably won’t transform demanding games into a much better experience.
