I'm running a Ryzen 5 3600 with a Radeon RX 6700 XT and 32GB of 3200MHz RAM. After moving to a 1440p monitor, my frame rates dropped, especially in Rust, with Palworld, Valheim, and Subnautica also in my library. I occasionally notice stutters, although those might be caused by the game server. My GPU usage is usually above 95% while gaming. Would replacing the 3600 with a Ryzen 7 5800X make a noticeable difference, or would I mostly need a graphics card upgrade? I know an X3D processor would likely be the best AM4 upgrade, but I don't want to spend around $350 on one.

Some of those games, especially Rust and simulation-heavy titles, can benefit from a faster CPU even when GPU usage is high in other situations. If you can find a reasonably priced used X3D chip for AM4, that would be the strongest drop-in upgrade. Otherwise, the 5800X is an improvement, but its value depends heavily on the price.
With the GPU sitting above 95% usage, you’re generally GPU-limited at your current settings and resolution, so a 5800X probably won’t increase average FPS very much. It would still be a worthwhile CPU upgrade for better minimums and smoother performance in CPU-heavy situations, but don’t expect it to fix a graphics bottleneck.
The practical upgrade path is a little awkward: a major GPU upgrade would eventually be held back by the Ryzen 5 3600 in CPU-heavy games, while a 5800X alone may not solve your current 1440p limitation. Check per-core CPU usage, frame-time graphs, and GPU usage during the actual stutters before buying anything. If the GPU is consistently maxed out, lower settings or a faster graphics card will have the biggest effect; if one or two CPU cores are heavily loaded, then upgrade the processor first.

That’s the key distinction. Overall CPU usage can look low while one game thread is completely maxed out, so average utilization by itself can be misleading.
