My current system has a Ryzen 7 5800X, Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB, 32GB of RAM, and a B550 Gaming X WiFi 6 motherboard. I play at 1080p and 144Hz, and I sometimes notice CPU-limited performance when streaming certain games. While gaming, I also need to run OBS and VTube Studio.
Would moving to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D noticeably improve average FPS, frame-time consistency, or 1% lows, or would the difference be minor? I know AM4 is a dead-end platform, but AM5 would be extremely expensive in the current market. I can get the 5800X3D for about €329, which seems much cheaper than replacing the motherboard, RAM, and CPU. Is it worthwhile, especially if I sell my current 5800X?

For games such as Destiny 2, Guild Wars 2, simulation titles, and some racing games, the difference can be very noticeable. The X3D chip often makes the minimums and frame times much more consistent, which matters a lot at 144Hz. At 1080p you are also more likely to see an advantage than at higher resolutions. Whether €329 is good value depends on the local price, but selling the 5800X would make the upgrade considerably easier to justify.
There is no universal guarantee of a big uplift. Some games will barely change, while others may gain a lot in minimum FPS and consistency. Before buying, test the problematic games with GPU utilization, individual core usage, frametime graphs, and OBS statistics visible. If the GPU is often below full utilization and the frame-time graph is uneven, the 5800X3D is a sensible last upgrade for this AM4 system.
It can definitely help, particularly at 1080p and high refresh rates. The biggest gains are likely to be in 1% lows, frame pacing, and reduced stuttering rather than a huge average-FPS increase. The extra 3D V-Cache helps games that are sensitive to cache and CPU latency, and those improvements can still show up even when total CPU usage does not reach 100%. Check GPU usage and per-core CPU usage in the games that cause trouble, but the 5800X3D is one of the best drop-in upgrades available for AM4.
If your current 5800X already delivers the frame rate you want and the CPU issues only happen occasionally, €329 may be hard to justify. But if you want to keep the platform for several more years, the 5800X3D effectively maxes out AM4 for gaming and avoids the much higher cost of moving to AM5. It is a worthwhile upgrade when paired with selling the old CPU, especially for 1080p high-refresh gaming.
Streaming changes the recommendation slightly. Both processors have eight cores, so the 5800X3D will not solve a problem caused by OBS, VTube Studio, or a game simply needing more CPU cores. Use GPU-based encoding if your graphics card supports it, and check whether OBS reports rendering or encoding lag. If the game itself is CPU-limited, though, the 5800X3D should still improve gaming smoothness while streaming.
If the issue is specifically too many background tasks competing for CPU time, an X3D upgrade may not be enough. Monitoring per-core load, OBS skipped frames, and the encoder being used should reveal which kind of bottleneck you have.

A CPU bottleneck does not always appear as 100% overall CPU usage. One busy thread, cache limitations, or poor frame pacing can hold performance back while the usage graphs look deceptively normal.
