I've been using an i9-12900K with an RTX 3080 for several years. At 1080p on low settings, I get around 340 FPS consistently with uncapped frame rates. I'm considering upgrading to an RTX 5080 and pairing it with a 1080p 480Hz-or-higher monitor. I've tried 27-inch 1440p displays before, but the larger image felt uncomfortable for playing. Would the GPU upgrade meaningfully improve my CS2 performance, or would another component be a better investment?

Before buying anything, update the motherboard BIOS, make sure the CPU is boosting properly, and check temperatures, memory settings, and background processes. Competitive settings at 1080p put a lot of demand on the processor. A 480Hz monitor can make motion feel smoother, but the benefit above roughly 300–360Hz is relatively small and requires very high, consistent frame rates. Adaptive sync and a good panel may be more worthwhile than chasing the highest refresh-rate number.
If your goal is very high and consistent FPS for a 480Hz display, a newer gaming-focused CPU would likely help more than replacing the graphics card. A Ryzen X3D system, such as a 7800X3D, 9800X3D, or newer equivalent, could improve CS2 frame rates and especially the lows during fights. Moving from an i9-12900K to a newer platform is a bigger change than simply installing a faster GPU.
At 1080p with competitive settings, CS2 is usually limited more by the CPU than the GPU. Your RTX 3080 is already capable, so an RTX 5080 probably won’t provide a major FPS increase unless the GPU is consistently at full utilization. Check GPU usage and frame-time data while playing before upgrading.
If you do decide that you need a GPU upgrade, compare current pricing rather than assuming the RTX 5080 is automatically the best choice. Other cards in the same performance range may offer better value, but the GPU should come after confirming that your RTX 3080 is the part limiting performance. At 1080p in CS2, the CPU upgrade is likely to have the larger impact.
I’ve only used Intel and Nvidia parts in my previous builds, so I haven’t tried an AMD CPU or GPU before.
