Advice for Transitioning from Helpdesk to Sysadmin

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of moving from a helpdesk position to a sysadmin role, but I don't really have a solid grasp of what's needed for this new role, which is making me a bit anxious. To give you some context, our current sysadmin (who's actually titled a senior systems engineer) is so swamped that their work is being split into three new positions: a security engineer (which they will assume), an OT engineer (to be hired), and the systems engineer role that I'm being offered. I'm a bit of a novice right now—just a helpdesk tech with some basic understanding of networking, virtualization, and servers. The management team and the current sysadmin think I can handle it, but I'm not so sure. I'd love to hear from anyone who's been in a similar situation. Is my anxiety valid? Would you take this opportunity? What kind of advice do you have for someone making this leap? Thanks a lot!

The best way to prepare is to get hands-on experience. Don’t be afraid to admit when you don’t know something; just take notes and keep checking your resources. Also, learning scripting like PowerShell will really help you improve processes. Remember, mishaps happen—take ownership and learn from them!
