I've got two job offers and I'm feeling a bit stuck on which one to choose. Both are contract roles with major companies—one is a media giant and the other is in the insurance sector. The media company is offering me a Tech Lead position focused on Infrastructure, CI/CD, and Kubernetes, with a solid existing setup but plenty of room for growth in the K8s ecosystem. On the other hand, the insurance company is offering an AWS DevOps role where I would lead their infrastructure, CI/CD, and serverless technologies. They primarily work with AWS and haven't transitioned to containers yet, so there's a lot I could shape in that environment. The salaries are pretty similar, and both positions are based in NYC. I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons and figure out which role would be the best for my career path. Any advice would be appreciated!

Honestly, I'd choose the media company for the k8s experience. That’s what employers are looking for, and having 'Tech Lead' on your resume from a media giant is impressive. The insurance role might sound promising, but if they're only focusing on AWS without containers, you might end up stuck with some outdated tech, which could affect your career trajectory. Plus, if Kubernetes is already in place, you'll have fewer risks and can learn and contribute without the pressure of having to convince others to adopt new tech.
If it were me, I’d lean towards the media company. Their focus on Kubernetes and multi-cloud systems is really trendy right now and will give you versatile skills. You'll be leading infrastructure work, which sounds like a great leadership opportunity, plus you’ll gain significant experience in an area that’s super in-demand. Since their systems are already established, you can also focus on optimizing instead of starting from scratch, which can be less stressful. That said, just make sure you’re comfortable with the stability after seeing layoffs in media—initial impressions can change quickly!
Both roles sound strong, but it’s all about your long-term goals. The media role will deepen your expertise in tech leadership and Kubernetes, which is huge right now. However, the AWS position lets you build things from the ground up, and it might give you more ownership over the architecture as they transition to containers. Think about where you see yourself in a few years—would you prefer being more specialized with K8s or broadening your skills with AWS and serverless tech? Ultimately, either path has its merits.
That's a good point about the relevance of k8s versus being stuck with pure AWS. Although I'm concerned about stability in media, the leadership and tech skills I would gain could outweigh that risk.
