I'm helping my son build a budget gaming rig, and I need some guidance on choosing the right graphics card. Here's what we have so far:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 8400F
- MOBO: Asus ROG Strix B850-A
- RAM: 32 GB DDR5 6000MT/s Viper Venom RGB
- PSU: Corsair CX750M 750 watt
- CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Halo White
- Primary HD: T-Force G50 512 GB M.2 2280 NVMe
- Secondary HD: T-Force Vulcan Z 2TB 2.5" SATA SSD
- CASE: NZXT H6 Flow
He wants to game at 1440p, primarily playing titles like RUST, Rocket League, Rainbow Six Siege, Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft. I'm considering the 7900 XTX for its long-term viability, but I'm worried about potential bottlenecking with his current CPU. Would it be better to go with a 7900 XT now, given the CPU upgrade he plans in the future? He's looking to keep the GPU price below $800, ideally avoiding Nvidia due to their higher costs. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, my setup runs just fine with a 5600X and a used 2070 Super at 1080p. If 1440p is a priority, you could probably get by with something like a B580, especially since those games aren’t too demanding under normal conditions. Don't feel pressured to overspend!
Those games are pretty CPU-intensive! I would recommend selling your current CPU and going for something with a 3D V-cache, like the Ryzen 5 7500X3D or Ryzen 7 7800X3D. If you stick with the GPU, consider the RX 9070 XT or even the RX 9060 XT if you need something more budget-friendly. Just make sure it fits your overall budget since the prices are getting a bit crazy these days.
I suggest looking into the 9070 XT instead of the 7900 XTX. Performance-wise, they’re pretty similar now, but the 9070 XT is cheaper and offers better ray tracing support and FSR4, which can really extend the GPU’s lifespan. While the 7900 XTX has more VRAM, I don’t think that will be necessary for most games at 1440p. However, you might experience some bottlenecking with your current CPU, so keep that in mind for future upgrades.
How about aiming for a 5070? It’s more power-efficient compared to the 7900 XTX or 9070 XT and should fit your 750w power supply better. It still performs well and could be a great addition without overspending!
