Advice Needed for Mid-Range PC Upgrade (CPU, Motherboard, RAM)

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on upgrading my mid-range PC. Here are my current specs: I have an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X CPU, an MSI B550 Gaming Carbon motherboard, an NVIDIA RTX 3070 GPU, and 32GB of DDR4 RAM. I've been trying to play Marathon lately, but it seems to be running worse than expected, hitting only around 60 to 80 FPS while other games run fine. It seems like the game is taxing the CPU more than the GPU, making me wonder if an upgrade is necessary. I'm hoping to improve performance without spending too much—around $2,500 on a whole new rig isn't feasible right now. I'm curious if I can upgrade the CPU or if I need to look into a new motherboard or RAM. Also, I was considering the Ryzen 9 9800, but I'm unsure if it's compatible with my current setup. Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, friends!

Honestly, it seems like you've hit the limits of your AM4 setup. If you’re looking for a CPU upgrade, the only real options left are the Ryzen 9 5950X or the X3D variants, but even those may not offer the performance boost you’re hoping for, especially in gaming. If you want to preserve your DDR4 RAM for now, you might want to consider upgrading to Intel's 14th gen, which still supports DDR4. However, you'll need a new motherboard. Just keep an eye on your GPU utilization while playing Marathon to see if that's actually the bottleneck.

I get that! Upgrading can be overwhelming, especially hearing you might be at the end of the line for AM4, but don't give up hope just yet. Maybe check out some benchmarks or forum posts about how the Ryzen 7 is performing in Marathon to verify if you really need to upgrade!
