I'm currently in the position of Senior IT Support Engineer at a company with around 250 employees. Recently, I received a rather small pay raise of 7.5%. I'm looking to negotiate this with my manager, but first, I want to clarify whether my responsibilities align more with those of an IT Support Engineer, a Sysadmin, or perhaps some other title. In our small team, we handle a wide range of tasks including managing infrastructure, helping users, handling internal tickets, maintaining both on-premises and cloud systems, managing backups, configuring Windows Server and Windows 11, monitoring data center health, and managing security systems. We also oversee M365 administration, domain/SSL lifecycle management, and user equipment configuration. While we work closely with vendors for escalations, we rarely rely on them. The only area where we're not involved is with the Linux servers, managed by our IT manager. We don't typically design or build systems, but we do maintain and administer them. What would you say my actual title should be? And if it's more aligned with Sysadmin, how much should I expect in terms of salary increase compared to my current position?

Titles in IT are often meaningless. You're more than just support if you're actively managing systems and infrastructure! If you feel underpaid, definitely bring up those responsibilities in your negotiation. Remember that your situation might differ from others based on company practices and location.
It sounds like you're doing a lot of sysadmin work, even if your title doesn't reflect that. Keep in mind that job titles can differ drastically from one company to another, so don't stress too much about the label. Focus on the skills you're gaining and the actual work you're doing! When it comes to pay, it's really location-dependent. I suggest checking job listings in your area to see what similar roles pay.
Totally agree! Titles are often just marketing for companies. Look at what you actually do and compare that to job ads to get a better idea of your worth.
Honestly, it seems like you should be classified more as a Sysadmin based on your responsibilities. As for pay, it's really about the job title in your area. Some companies might pay Sysadmins more, while others keep them at the same level as IT Support Engineers. It's essential to compare your duties with job listings nearby to have a solid ground for negotiations.
Yeah, it can be all over the place! I had a similar situation where my title didn't match my work. Research your local job market; it'll help in negotiations.

Right? Don't let a title limit your self-assessment. Just focus on what your contributions are!
