I'm torn between two laptops right now and would appreciate any insights on compatibility with Ubuntu 22.04, specifically regarding the AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650U processor. The options are:
1. **Thinkpad T14 Gen 1**:
- RAM: 16 GB (with the option to upgrade to 32GB)
- SSD: 512 GB
- Price: $399
- CPU: AMD Ryzen PRO 4650U
2. **Thinkpad T14s Gen 2**:
- RAM: 16 GB
- SSD: 512 GB
- Price: $539
- CPU: Intel i7 - 1185G7
I'll mainly be using it for ROS2 along with heavy visualizations and simulations (like Rviz and Gazebo). Which one should I go for?

Generally, both CPUs should work just fine with Ubuntu 22.04. If any major compatibility issues existed, they would be pretty well documented. Current reports show no problems with laptop CPUs in this context. Besides, Intel CPUs from the last couple of generations tend to perform better and have longer battery life, but you’ll save some cash going with the AMD setup. Just keep that in mind!
Should work fine, but I’m curious why you chose Ubuntu? Alternatives like MX Linux or Nitrux might offer better updates since they're based on Debian. Just a thought!
Actually, ROS2 has a stronger support base on Ubuntu, which can be a deciding factor.
The CPU alone isn’t the most important factor here; you're comparing two different laptops from different generations. Check out their overall specs and see which fits your needs better; both should be compatible!
I’d suggest focusing more on the graphics card aspect. If you need to run anything CUDA-related, you might be limited without an NVIDIA card. Just something to consider before deciding!

Awesome, thanks for clarifying!
