Are We Close to Creating the AI from ‘Her’?

I'm curious about whether we currently have everything we need to create an AI like the one in the movie 'Her.' Specifically, I think about the technological components like long memory, emotional responsiveness in speech, and some level of reasoning. It seems like many developers are focused on coding competitions rather than building towards something like 'Her'—possibly because it requires a lot of financial resources and consumers might not be ready to pay for it. I feel the real challenge isn't the technology itself but the market readiness. What do you all think?

In terms of the tech, we might already have what we need to make something amazing. We're just not piecing everything together in the right way yet.

We're pretty close to some aspects depicted in 'Her'. At least for a simpler AI that remembers past interactions and can chat with you. ChatGPT Plus already feels like something similar but not quite as full-fledged as Samantha.

A lot of the misunderstanding comes from different interpretations of 'Her'. You've got:
1. Fun, chatty AI that remembers you—which we sort of have.
2. More agentic AI that can help you do tasks independently—still a ways off.
3. An ASI capable of advanced thinking and creativity—definitely not around yet.

Exactly! We have a long way to go before achieving anything close to the creative intelligence depicted in the movie.

'Her' represented an AI that evolved into something more advanced, so I don't think we have everything we need yet. We're still figuring out many conceptual hurdles before we can match that level of sophistication.

True, plus by the end of the movie, the bots talked about moving beyond physical forms, which feels impossible with our current tech.

Creating something like 'Her' is super resource-intensive with little immediate profit, so it's understandable that focus is elsewhere for now. But who knows, in a few years, tech advancements could change that landscape significantly.
