Best CPU and Air Cooler Upgrade for Gaming?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my CPU and motherboard. Right now, I have an i5-9600k paired with a 4070, and I want to know what CPU would be a good upgrade. I play a variety of games and game at 1440p with a 240Hz monitor, so I want something future-proof. Is the 9800x3d overkill for my setup? For the motherboard, I'm considering the MSI MAG B850M Mortar WiFi. Also, I'd like some recommendations for an air cooler; I was thinking about the Deepcool Assassin IV. Thanks for any suggestions!

The 9800X3D is a solid choice, but if you're looking to save some cash, the 7800X3D is a great alternative. The 9700X is cheaper and still powerful, but for budget options, you might want to look at the 9600X or 7700. Also, don't forget you'll need RAM! And as for coolers, the Peerless Assassin and Phantom Spirit are popular right now, regarded as the 'meme coolers' everyone seems to buy.

What do you mean by 'meme coolers'? I thought the Peerless Assassin was the top budget air cooler? Did something change? I'm just getting back into PC building after upgrading to a 9070xt.

Yeah, it's just that Thermalright coolers have really taken off. Their 360mm AIO for under $60 is a steal, and their fans are super cheap too!

Actually, I think you might have mentioned the wrong CPU; you currently have an i5-13600k, right? If that's the case, you might not even need an upgrade yet. The 13600k and 4070 combo is pretty good, and if you're not hitting your desired FPS, it could be your GPU holding you back, not the CPU.

Yeah, I agree. You might be better off investing in a new GPU instead of upgrading your CPU right now.

Honestly, sticking with the 13600k is likely your best bet. If you really want to upgrade, consider the 13/14700k or 13/14900k, but I would advise against it unless you're looking at the 9800x3D for a meaningful boost.

If you're looking for a balance between power and cooling, the 9700X is a great option and should easily last you for years. Plus, it's relatively cheaper compared to the X3D processors.
