Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum! I'm trying to find the perfect GPU to gift my little brother for Christmas. He's currently using an old NVIDIA 1000 series graphics card, and he's been gaming quite a bit with his girlfriend and friends. From what I understand, he mainly plays Rust and sometimes other games like Battlefield or League of Legends. I'm not really into gaming or PC builds myself, so I want to make sure I get something he can actually use and will last a while without him needing another upgrade soon. My partner mentioned that AMD could be a better value, but I've seen options from both AMD and NVIDIA and I'm a bit lost on which model to choose. My budget is flexible, and since I'm based in the UK, it would be great to have it arrive before Christmas. Any recommendations for a solid GPU that's great for gaming? Should I lean towards AMD or NVIDIA, and what else should I consider? Thanks a lot! Hope everyone is gearing up for a lovely Christmas!

Can I ask what CPU your brother is running? That can affect which GPU he can use effectively without running into bottlenecks.
If this isn’t a surprise gift, why not just ask him directly? It could save you a lot of hassle if he helps you find the right component.
Haha, he’s a bit vague when it comes to expensive gifts, but I guess that would be the easiest way for both of us!
Definitely provide more details about his current setup, especially his CPU, since an older CPU might hold back a newer GPU’s performance. If his CPU is underwhelming, that could be an issue.
I figured as much, and I have asked him for more specifics, but he hasn't given me the complete setup yet. Is there any way to work around that, or is it just a recipe for issues if the CPU isn’t up to snuff?
What’s your maximum budget for the GPU? That can really guide recommendations.
I’m flexible! I looked on some sites like Overclockers and Scan, and the new GPUs seem to be in the £700-900 range. I know prices have been high lately, so I want to make sure I invest in something worthwhile.
If you're aiming for something top-notch without breaking the bank, I'd suggest looking at the 9070 or 9070 XT, or even the 5070 Ti if you want a solid mid-range option. For a more budget-friendly choice that still significantly outperforms the older GTX 1000 cards, check out the RX 9060 XT 16GB or the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB. Just make sure to get the 16GB versions, as they'll provide better longevity for future upgrades!
Thanks a lot, this is really helpful! I’ll definitely look into these options.
Absolutely spot on! For a good future-proof GPU, 16GB of VRAM is a must. I just upgraded to the RTX 5070 Ti myself after a lot of research, and I feel it offers fantastic value right now. And hey, kudos to you for being such a thoughtful sibling!

He mentioned he has a Ryzen 5 3600. He’s had it for a few years now, so I know he’s considering an upgrade soon, but I’ve heard from others that it's still a solid choice for a mid-range setup.
