Best HDD Options for Long-Term Data Storage?

Hey everyone! I'm getting ready for a long trip across the country and need to back up my personal data before I format my computer. I currently use about 1.5TB to 2TB of data spread across various SSDs. I'm really anxious about losing my data, so I want to make sure it's safe while I'm away. I know that cloud backups are a great option, but I'm also considering an external HDD. I've heard a lot about the WD Elements HDD as a good choice. My question is, what's more reliable for keeping my data safe in the long run: should I go for two 2TB HDDs and split my data between them or just use one 4TB HDD? Also, I'll be storing this data for about 1-2 years, so I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks! <3

The WD Elements HDDs have been trusted for years, so you're on the right track! If you're not planning to access the drives often and they’ll stay in one spot, an HDD is better since SSDs can lose data if they're not powered on for a long time. That said, you should really think about having multiple copies. If something happened to those drives due to fire or damage, you'd lose everything. If you can, using both options could be smart: store a copy on the 4TB and split your data across the two 2TB drives. That way you have redundancy. Also, consider cleaning up any unnecessary files to maximize your backup space!

Yeah, I agree! It's a good idea to keep your personal files backed up separately from less important stuff. Maybe keep some copies on the 2TB drives and the most important ones on the 4TB.

I wouldn't rely on just one HDD for important data. Drives can fail anytime, no matter the brand. I suggest you look into a NAS setup along with a cloud backup for your crucial files. It’s a bit of an investment but worth it if you care about the data!
