I'm trying to revitalize an ancient Compaq desktop that only has 512MB of RAM and can't handle Windows XP. I'm looking for recommendations on lightweight Linux distros that would run smoothly on such limited hardware. Any suggestions?

TinyCore is really minimalistic and would fit your setup like a glove! Just be prepared to customize a bit since it’s quite hands-on. You might also want to check out antiX if you're looking for something like a full desktop experience.

Thanks for the heads-up about antiX! I’ll check it out.

Totally agree on antiX! It’s designed to be lightweight and works great with older systems.

Debian is a solid option for its flexibility and lightweight variations. You can customize your installation to keep it light. If you seek something simpler, Puppy Linux or Damn Small Linux (DSL) can run smoothly on older hardware too!

I’d suggest trying MX Linux. They have a 32-bit version, and it worked pretty well on my old Core 2 Duo. It’s user-friendly and performs decently on low spec machines.
