Hey everyone! I'm new to Linux and currently experimenting with it as a computer science student. I've just rescued a Dell Optiplex 760 from the recyclers at my university. Here are the specs:

- Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
- Graphics: AMD HD 8490 C553
- RAM: 6GB DDR2
- Storage: 500GB Seagate Barracuda SATA @ 5400RPM
- Motherboard: Dell Proprietary
- Power Supply: Dell Proprietary

I'm currently running Linux Mint XFCE, and while it functions OK, it's a bit sluggish because of the hard drive. I'm looking for advice on a lighter Linux distro that could run better for my needs, which mainly include doing assignments, web browsing, and using Intellij IDEA. I also SSH into a university server for school work. Any suggestions?

MXLinux with the XFCE desktop is a solid choice for lighter performance! It might run smoother on your hardware.
