I'm a university student looking to switch from Windows to Linux because I'm just fed up with it. My laptop has a Ryzen 5 7430u, Vega 7 integrated graphics, 16GB of dual-channel RAM, and a 1TB NVMe drive. My main use cases are studying and some light to medium gaming, but I find my current setup quite limiting. I have a little experience with Linux, having used Ubuntu a couple of years ago for basic cybersecurity tasks like setting up a web server, firewalls, and other essentials. Just so you know, I'm not interested in Linux Mint because I don't like how its desktop environments look; I prefer something more visually appealing from the start. Any suggestions?

Not sure what you mean by 'built-in DE', but I think the default for Mint, which is Cinnamon, is a bit dull too, to be honest. For a more visually pleasing experience, I'd suggest trying GNOME; it's all about that eye candy! If you want something more customizable, KDE Plasma with Fedora is a fantastic choice. You can start with GNOME and once you get the hang of it, switch to KDE for even more customization!
I’ve had great experiences with Fedora using the KDE desktop environment. It looks modern and is easy to customize. Plus, you can access a bunch of useful tools through flatpak and RPM, like Obsidian and Anki, and of course, you can install Steam for gaming. If performance is key for you, you might even want to check out the cachy kernel for Fedora. It's pretty solid!
I recently switched to ZorinOS and I’m really impressed with how smooth and intuitive it feels. It could be worth a shot for your needs!

Isn't that what Bazzite does?
