Best Linux Distro for Total Newbies Who Don’t Want to Update Manually

I'm looking for a Linux distribution for my wife, who is quite inexperienced with technology. She currently uses a Windows 10 desktop and a Windows 11 laptop, and I've been her tech support far too often, especially since the forced Windows 11 update has caused quite a few headaches. I'm somewhat familiar with Linux myself, as I use Pop!_OS on my devices, but what I really want is a distro that can handle updates on its own without needing any command-line input or user intervention. Is there a user-friendly Linux distro out there that could work for someone like her who never wants to deal with maintenance tasks?

You can set up automatic updates on Debian-based distros. Both Ubuntu and Mint can be configured to handle updates more smoothly, but you'll still need to do some manual things every now and then.

Yeah, it's tough to find a distro where zero interaction is needed. Mint is user-friendly and integrates updates in a nice GUI.

Mint is definitely one of the easiest to start with, especially for someone coming from Windows!

Most distros do have GUI options for updates, but no well-known Linux system will auto-update without some user confirmation. Fedora has a decent option that allows for upgrades at boot, but you'll still need to give your password.

Honestly, I'd be cautious about how much better the experience will be. It really depends on what she's messing up on Windows. If it's just issues with crashes and bugs, then you might find Linux isn't a perfect solution either. Linux can give you more freedom but also opens up a lot more ways to run into problems.

Exactly! Just switching from Windows to Linux doesn’t guarantee a smoother experience, especially if she’s prone to issues.

Absolutely, without a doubt! If it's user error, she'll likely still have challenges no matter the OS.

Why not try Zorin OS? I've been using it for a few weeks and haven't had to type anything into the terminal yet. The updates just pop up, and she can choose to install them when they're available.

Just keep in mind that while Zorin is easy to use, it does have a standard update process too!

Indeed, Zorin is a great option for beginners, just like Mint or Ubuntu.

If your wife is looking to use common apps like Free/Libre Office and isn't into gaming or complex setups, consider Ubuntu MATE. It's lightweight and more straightforward, but she’ll still need to enter a password for updates that will prompt her now and then.
