Best Practices for Hosting Audio Files on a Website

I'm looking to add a 'Listen to the Article' feature on my website, and I'm wondering about the best way to handle hosting the audio files. We have a massive archive with over 60,000 articles from the last 25 years, and if we include older ones, that number jumps to over 100,000. Each week, we add 40 to 50 new articles, but I don't expect every article will have an audio version. I'm considering options like hosting files on S3, but I'm worried about the potential costs. Should I host the audio files locally and monitor bandwidth usage instead, or are there any audio-specific hosting providers, similar to services used for podcasts, that I should consider? Any advice would be appreciated!

You might want to check out some budget-friendly storage solutions. You don’t need top-tier speeds; just something that offers reasonable access will do. S3 has different pricing tiers, so that could be an option too. Personally, I love the idea of self-hosting, but for that much data, it’s crucial to have a good backup option in place. A solid home network could be a great starting point for handling the traffic.

You could also consider mounting a separate storage volume dedicated just for your audio files on a server.
