Best Way to Transfer Data from HDD to SSD/External Drive Without a Working Desktop?

Hey everyone! My desktop just died on me – the power supply failed completely, and I can't access my data. I have tons of hours of world-building saved in my HDD that I desperately want to keep safe. Since I'll need to buy or build a new PC eventually, I'm looking for the best ways to transfer my data now to either an SSD or an external hard drive. What's the most cost-effective and safe method to do this? Any tips would really help me out!

You can always repurpose your existing HDD as an external drive! If it's an NVME SSD, just grab an enclosure (they're around $15 on Amazon) that connects via USB. For standard SATA HDDs, similar enclosures exist. This way, you can access your data directly through USB or transfer it to another computer easily. Have you considered this route?

Yeah, I’m looking into that. I asked about the power supply, but they mentioned some parts might be difficult to track down because it's older tech. I thought about it too since replacements are pretty affordable.

What brand and model series is your PC? That info might help with finding a solution that fits your situation better.

Why not just replace the power supply? It's usually a simple fix and could bring your desktop back to life without needing to transfer anything. You could get back to your world-building right away!

I actually took it to a tech place, and they told me my Dell's power supply parts are hard to find since it's an older model. They've suggested I go for an upgrade to an SSD or just get an external drive instead. Sounds like a plan, but it got me wondering if that’s really the best approach.
