I recently asked about the new iPhone 17 Pro Max at an authorized reseller in India. They informed me that I could only pre-order or buy the phone if I also purchased AppleCare, which I don't want. Is it even legal for them to mandate this when Apple states that AppleCare is optional?

This isn't just you; several people are reporting similar experiences in different cities. Seems like resellers might be colluding to boost their earnings. It's worth raising the issue with Apple, as they might not be aware of how their resellers are acting.
That definitely sounds like a questionable practice! Apple usually wants their customers to have the freedom to choose if they want added services like AppleCare. I’d say contacting Apple directly was a good move; they might take action against this if it’s widespread.
Yeah, I'm really curious to see Apple's response. If it's happening at multiple locations, they need to know about it!
Honestly, it feels like a scam to me. Requiring AppleCare to buy a phone could end up backfiring on these stores if it gets reported. Apple should definitely check into this, as it's not the kind of reputation they want.
True! They could be trying to capitalize on the hype for the new iPhone. It’s a little sketchy for sure.
