Can Connecting My PC to Ethernet Improve WiFi for Other Devices?

I just got back home from college and my mom's been saying our internet has been really slow lately. When I connected my gaming PC to the router via Ethernet, she noticed that the WiFi for other devices seems to be running much better than it has in a week. We still have super slow speeds overall, usually just 1-2 megabits per second. I'm curious, is it normal for WiFi to improve after hooking up a PC like this?

Connecting your PC to Ethernet shouldn't directly improve the WiFi for other devices. But if your PC was consuming a lot of bandwidth before, now that it's on a wired connection, it might free up some bandwidth for the WiFi. Sounds like your router might be struggling or your PC was impacting the WiFi more than expected. It's worth checking that out!

That makes sense! I didn't realize it could impact the WiFi that much.

No, plugging in a PC shouldn't make the WiFi faster. Ethernet and WiFi are different; connecting via Ethernet just gives your PC a stable connection. If your WiFi got better, it might just be coincidence or something else going on with your network. Check your speeds to see if there's a pattern.

That's interesting! I noticed it got better right after I connected.

I think it’s just coincidental. If your PC had built-in WiFi that was on, it could’ve been causing interference. Connecting via Ethernet might have disabled that and improved the overall WiFi signal for others. Might be something to look into, just in case the router needs a restart or something!

Yeah, sometimes changing one thing can unexpectedly help other connections.
