Can I locate my phone using Find My iPhone if I think it was stolen on a plane?

I'm currently on a plane and I think I might have lost my phone. I fell asleep early in the flight, and when I woke up, it was gone. The flight attendants helped search around my seat but couldn't find it. I'm worried that it either fell off my lap during some turbulence or that someone took it while I was asleep. I didn't connect to Wi-Fi before dozing off, and my phone's battery is down to around 30%. I have 10 hours left in the air.

My main question is: once we land, will I be able to connect to my phone's hotspot to find it? And if my phone dies mid-flight, will I still be able to ping it when we land? I know sometimes even dead phones can be located, but will I be out of luck if mine isn't charged? Any advice would be greatly appreciated since I'm feeling quite stressed about possibly losing my phone.

Once you're on the ground and it's safe to turn your phone on again, you could have someone call your number. You might get lucky and hear it ringing if it's within earshot!

Just a heads up on your main concern: if your phone is dead, it won't be able to play a sound or update its location until it's charged again. However, it might still show its last known location if it was near other Apple devices before it died, so don’t totally lose hope!

That's not entirely accurate! Even if your phone is dead, it can report its location if it's near other Apple devices. Just keep in mind, it won't play sounds until it’s powered back up.

Using Bluetooth might help! If you have an Apple Watch, you could ping your phone to make it chirp. This works via Bluetooth, and if someone else on the flight has an iPhone, you could even try asking them to AirDrop something to see if it's nearby. Just remember, your phone's Bluetooth might not be active, but it’s worth a shot!

Your Find My iPhone should still be able to locate your device. You can log into Find My from another Apple device or the iCloud website. Just keep in mind, it will only show you the last known location if the phone is off, but if you manage to connect to the flight's Wi-Fi, using the Find My network could help locate it without needing your phone to be online. Triggering a sound may depend on its charge, though.

If you have an Apple Watch, definitely take advantage of that! You can ping your phone directly from your watch, which could help you locate it if it's nearby.
