I'm wondering if it's possible to make calls and receive SMS using my SIM card on a Linux PC, specifically within the Waydroid Android container. I'm currently using Fedora Kinoite. I've seen people use SIM cards placed inside USB devices for internet access, but I'm not sure if there's a way to also use it for calls and texts. Is there a specific device that allows this functionality? If such a device exists, can it connect with Waydroid to enable SMS and calling features? My phone is almost dead, and I need a workaround until I can afford a new one.

In theory, you can do this since Android runs on a version of Linux. However, there are challenges when it comes to the hardware that interacts with the SIM and mobile network, as it's often not well-supported or missing some key features.

The type of network matters! For instance, 3G devices similar to USB flash drives are relatively cheap and can do what you need. But for 4G and 5G, you'll find larger and more expensive options. Some routers with 4G SIM slots might be helpful if you're looking to keep costs down.

I really want to send and receive SMS and make calls. Can I achieve this with a 3G device? What's the specific name for such devices, and is there any Linux software I should consider?

It really depends on how functional your current phone is. There are ways to remotely control your phone using software like KDE Connect, but you still need your phone to be somewhat operational. Most PCs lack the necessary hardware for SIM connections, but you can look into buying devices designed for that purpose. Just weigh that against the cost of getting a new phone—sometimes it's a better investment!
