Can I Recover Data from a Non-Working Mac?

I spilled water on my Mac quite some time ago, and it hasn't turned on since. I've recently bought a new one and I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to recover files from the old Mac. Am I out of luck here, or is there something I can do? I don't really know much about computers, so any advice would be appreciated!

What model Mac do you have? If you were using Time Machine, your backups would be stored on an external drive. Did you have one set up?

It's a MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip. Unfortunately, I never backed it up on any external storage. Should I start doing that with my new laptop?
