Hey everyone, quick question! Is it safe to unplug and plug the SATA cable of my WD 2TB HDD while my PC is still running? I've got the HDD set up behind a TUF plate and it's already connected to power. The other day, while watching a movie from it, the drive suddenly disappeared from my PC. I turned the PC off, switched SATA ports, and it's working again, but now I'm wondering if that's okay to do or if it could mess with the SATA ports.

What you did is often referred to as Surprise Hot Unplug and Surprise Hot Plug. Most SATA connectors have a staggered pin design to prevent damage when reconnecting. However, while the hardware's safe, you might run into issues with your operating system. If the OS gets confused, it could lead to data corruption, especially if it’s not ready for the device to be unplugged.
It's generally not recommended to unplug SATA cables while the PC is running. It's a bit risky, but usually, nothing bad happens. Just to be safe, you should always power off your computer completely before reconnecting anything.
I actually did it and now I'm having issues! My Windows 11 is stuck in an automatic repair loop, and the fresh install from a USB is taking forever. I'm really not sure if it’s because of that.
I just unplugged the data cable, not the power. Do you think that still causes problems? Because today my PC won’t boot into Windows 11 unless I unplug that HDD. It's stuck in a bootloop!
