Can I safely use a 140W charger with my laptop that normally uses a 65W charger?

I'm setting up a home office and my work laptop comes with a 65W charger. I'm considering a docking station that requires a separate 140W power supply. Will using this higher wattage charger damage my laptop? I believe it connects via USB-C, so I'm assuming it would manage power effectively, but I want to be sure. Also, I've been having trouble finding a 140W charger. Does anyone know if online retailers sell them?

Generally, higher wattage chargers are safe as they don’t push more power than your device needs. Modern devices negotiate their power requirements, so your laptop will only draw what it requires, even if the charger can provide more than enough. No worries about frying it!

Exactly! It’s about voltage compatibility. As long as the voltage matches your laptop’s needs, it will pull exactly what it needs and nothing more.

Yeah, newer devices are quite smart about power management. Should be just fine!

No need to worry! Your laptop won't just suck up all 140W from the charger; it only takes what it needs. It’s like a buffet, you can have 140 dishes available, but you’ll only take the amount you want!

Great analogy! I love how you put that!

You don’t have to stress about this. The significant thing is that the voltage matches; the charger just needs to offer the right amount of volts. USB-C handles the rest automatically, so you’re covered!

Thanks for all the info, everyone! Just to clarify, it’s really all about watts, volts, and amps. Just make sure you get a power supply that matches the voltage while having excess amp capacity. Your laptop should be perfectly fine with a 140W charger!
