Can I Succeed in a DevOps Role with Minimal Experience?

I just landed a DevOps job at a large company with around 400 developers, but my experience is quite limited. I've only done some part-time IT work during university. They hired me mainly because I successfully completed a project involving CI/CD runners and AWS EC2 instances, which I heavily relied on ChatGPT for. They appreciate my ability to work independently, especially since there aren't many senior DevOps around to guide me. Am I in over my head here, or is it possible to thrive in this role? What steps can I take to prepare myself better?

Prepare for some challenges ahead, but don’t stress too much. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at first. Prioritize learning about key strategies like Disaster Recovery and ensuring data integrity. If you have a good attitude and stay curious, you'll make it through just fine!

Definitely don't worry too much! One of the best things you can do is build your own homelab to practice and experiment. Personal projects will help you understand concepts better and give you confidence in your skills. Also, consider taking some online courses—they can clarify some theoretical aspects that will help you in your daily tasks.

Congrats on the new job! As long as you're motivated to learn, you should do great. Focus on mastering essential tools and practices like CI/CD, Docker, and AWS services. Networking with your colleagues and asking questions is important too. Just remember, it’s all about the problem-solving mindset!

Just a heads up—eventually, relying too much on AI and forums won’t cut it. You'll need to dig into documentation and develop a solid understanding of the tools and code involved. It’s not just about getting by but actually building your skills over time.

You'll be fine! Many people with a similar background have successfully tackled DevOps roles. Just be proactive in learning and adapting. It might feel daunting at first, but the skills you're building now will be invaluable. Just like the others have said, researching solutions and using resources like ChatGPT will serve you well; it’s all part of the job these days.
