Hey everyone! I'm looking for some guidance. I've got an old 2016 MacBook that I used for a while, but the screen broke in 2021 and I haven't used it since, plus I can't find the charger. I recently bought a new MacBook Air and I really want to access the files from my old laptop, like videos and software. Can I take my old MacBook to an Apple Store and have them transfer all the data onto an external hard drive so I can access it from my new one? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks for all your suggestions! I just ordered a new charger and an HDMI adapter for my old Mac. My plan is to get it powered up and then use another screen to see what I can access. If I can't get it on, then that's a different issue. I'll keep everyone posted!
Target Disk Mode is a great option! Just connect the two Macs, and you should be able to drag your files over seamlessly. If you run into a login password issue, it’s likely due to a different user profile; try accessing them under the same login if possible.
Definitely, but remember that while you can transfer files, it's best to install applications and extensions from the original sources instead of just copying them over. This could save you some headaches down the line!
If you can get your old MacBook to turn on, you could try using an external monitor to see what's going on. Also, look into using Target Disk Mode; it should let your new Mac access the old drive like it's an external one. Just keep in mind that since your MacBook is older, Apple might have limits on what they can do in-store.
Another solid method is to connect both machines with either a USB or Thunderbolt cable and use Migration Assistant. You could also check with Apple to see if they might help you out, although be prepared that they might not do it for free.
