Can I Upgrade My GTX 1080 to an RTX 3060 with My Current Setup?

I'm planning to upgrade my PC and currently have a GTX 1080. It's been a solid performer, but I want to play more modern games. Is it possible to just swap in an RTX 3060 into my existing setup with an i7 7700k, or will I need to replace everything else too? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You might want to consider finding a card that has more than 8GB of VRAM. I recently transitioned from a 1660 Super to a 5060, and even then, I noticed that newer games tended to max out the VRAM quite quickly, even at 1080p on mid settings.

I've been eyeing a 5070 since it's only $100 more than the 4070, which I’d need to buy used anyway.

Changing everything isn't necessary! GPUs still use the same PCIe x16 slots as before, so you can definitely swap it out without needing a new motherboard. The RTX 3060 will give you about a 25% performance increase, but keep in mind that a GTX 1080 Ti is around the same level as a 12GB RTX 3060. If you're considering the 8GB version, it might not be worth it.

I wasn't specifically aiming for a 3060 but wanted to know if I could use it. With newer games looking way worse without the RTX features, I thought maybe I’d need a whole new setup. It's tough financially to upgrade the GPU and everything else right now!

Honestly, moving to an RTX 3060 isn't really a major upgrade from a GTX 1080 since their performance is quite similar. If you're looking for a better boost, consider checking out used cards like the RTX 3070 or the RX 6700 instead!
