Can I Upgrade My Ryzen 5 to a Ryzen 7 with a 310W PSU?

I have a 2020 HP prebuilt PC with a GTX 1650 and a Ryzen 5 3400G, and it has 16GB of RAM. The power supply is a 310W proprietary one, which makes changing it difficult. My motherboard can support a Ryzen 7 3700X, but it doesn't support a Ryzen 5 3600. I'm concerned that the 310W PSU might struggle with the Ryzen 7 3700X, especially under heavy gaming loads. What do you all think—would upgrading be a safe move?

It looks like your upgrade options are limited by your motherboard compatibility. If you're already maxing out the PSU with your current setup, the Ryzen 7 3700X might put too much strain on it.

Right, and considering the Ryzen 5 3500 only offers a slight performance boost over your current CPU, it might not be worth the hassle to upgrade if you're concerned about power.

Make sure to check if your motherboard is also proprietary. Sometimes they restrict compatibility even further. If it is, that could limit you when trying to upgrade.

Yeah, it's proprietary—HP Erica 8643. Guess it's just tough luck with this build!
