I'm looking to upgrade a Server 2012R2 to 2019 directly. I inherited this server setup, and it's not a Domain Controller or running anything critical. It mainly has an app for historical records. I've heard mixed things about whether the upgrade media has to be the same, and I want to confirm this. The current product key channel is Volume:MAK. Any advice on this? Thanks!

You can definitely do an in-place upgrade, and there's no requirement for the media to be the same. If it's a virtual machine, just make sure you have a good backup before starting. For a physical server, having multiple backups is always a good plan.

I've upgraded from 2012R2 to 2019 many times without a hitch. It's become my go-to method. Just remember to take a snapshot or backup beforehand and test everything afterward. The upgrade usually takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Just a tip: ensure your server is 64-bit. If it's 32-bit, the upgrade isn't possible. Thankfully, Server 2012 R2 is confirmed to be 64-bit, so you're in the clear there!
