Can I use a PCI-E 5.0 video card in a PCI-E 3.0 slot?

Hey everyone! I have a Ryzen 5 2600 with an RX 580 on an ASRock B450M Pro4 motherboard. I'm considering upgrading my setup and wondering if it makes sense to install a new video card (specifically the RX 9060 XT with 16GB) into my PCI-E 3.0 slot. Will this actually improve performance, or will it be limited by the PCI-E 3.0 interface? I know my CPU might become a bottleneck, but I'm aiming for at least 75 FPS at 1080p in newer games. Would this configuration hold me back significantly?

Here's a neat resource for visuals on performance differences: [NVIDIA RTX 5090 PCIe 5.0 vs. 4.0 vs. 3.0 Scaling Benchmarks](https://gamersnexus.net/gpus/nvidia-rtx-5090-pcie-50-vs-40-vs-30-x16-scaling-benchmarks). In short, you won’t see any significant improvement with the new card in a PCI-E 3.0 slot, as long as it can handle full 16 lanes.

Yes, you can definitely use a PCI-E 5.0 video card in a PCI-E 3.0 slot, but be aware that there will be a performance hit. For instance, a card like the RTX 5070 Ti will not reach its full potential on PCI-E 3.0 compared to PCI-E 5.0. Essentially, PCI-E 3.0 x16 slots will bottleneck high-performance cards designed for PCI-E 5.0, which could affect your gaming experience.

Thanks for clarifying! So, if I want to future-proof my setup, I should consider a motherboard upgrade eventually?

Exactly! If you want to get the most out of newer cards, a motherboard with PCI-E 4.0 or 5.0 will help.

Just a heads up, a lot of us don't understand Russian but from what I gathered, you're looking to use a newer GPU in an older slot. Performance-wise, there's gonna be a noticeable slowdown since the newer cards will be bottlenecked by the PCI-E 3.0 bandwidth. You might still get decent performance, but it won’t be anywhere near optimal if you're pushing high frame rates on new titles.

Got it! I appreciate the heads up. I'll have to weigh my options.
