I'm looking for some advice on whether I can set up my old laptop as a second monitor. It's pretty much on its last legs with a failing motherboard, and I was hoping to make use of the screen without having to power it on. Is that possible?

I hate to say it, but that's a no-go. While it might seem like a good idea to repurpose your old laptop, low-end monitors can be super cheap and won't give you all the headaches.
Unfortunately, you can't really use an old laptop like that. It won't work without powering it up, and honestly, you might be better off picking up a cheap monitor instead. They're pretty affordable these days!
Nope, it's just not feasible. Instead, think about exploring low-cost monitors or even used ones; they're easily available and would be a lot simpler for your setup.
Just to add to what others are saying, you really can't make that work without power. Your best bet for a second screen would definitely be to invest in an external monitor.
