Can I Use Type 4 SATA Cables with My Old RM850 PSU?

I received a first-generation RM850 power supply from a friend, complete with several Type 3 cables, including the 24-pin motherboard cable. The model number is 75-001938, and it's the oldest RM850 version with the gold sticker. However, I'm missing some SATA cables since I only have one Type 3 SATA cable available. I also own a newer RM1000x power supply that uses Type 4 cables, and I have some extra SATA cables from that PSU. They look similar but are different types (Type 4). After doing some research, I believe it's safe to use the Type 4 SATA cables with my older RM850, but I want to confirm this because I've had an incident in the past where using the wrong cables caused an SSD to burn out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you know how to check the pinouts with a multimeter, then you could verify compatibility yourself. But if you're unsure, I'd advise you to recycle those cables and just get a safe replacement. Better to be safe than sorry!

Learned the hard way that Type 4 cables should not be used with a Type 3 unit—trust me on this! There's often good deals on opened but unused PSUs online, so keep an eye out for a quality replacement that fits your needs.

Honestly, I'd recommend looking for a new PSU instead of taking the risk. Spending around $80 for a reliable unit is a small price to pay for peace of mind regarding your components. You never want to experience that burning smell again!

You might want to check out the Corsair compatibility page. From what I remember, the only significant difference between Type 3 and Type 4 cables is the pinout of the 24-pin ATX cable. Other cables like the SATA and PCIe are generally interchangeable. Just be cautious and double-check!
