Can My HDD Be Damaged by Magnets?

I just picked up a 3.5" HDD from Micro Center, and while checking out, the clerk placed it right next to a magnetic tray full of screws. I'm wondering if there's any chance that this exposure could have damaged the hard drive. Am I in trouble here?

You're in the clear! Even if your HDD was affected while it was off, any potential data issues could easily be fixed by formatting it before use. Generally, magnets won't physically harm HDDs, just possibly corrupt the data. But you're not screwed!

True! Formatting these days is mostly just metadata changing. I’d be surprised if a small magnet could mess anything up.

If you're really worried, just give it a shot. If it happens to be broken, you can always exchange it for a replacement. You're probably totally fine!

Honestly, it's no big deal. For a magnet to affect an HDD, it would need to be quite strong. Plus, there are already stronger magnets inside the drive. Just install it and see how it works!

Don't worry about it! The chances of a magnet near your HDD doing any real damage are basically zero. If HDDs were that sensitive, we’d have a lot more issues when transporting them from factories to homes. You're totally fine!
