Can Someone Harm My Computer Remotely Without Logging In?

I recently encountered a scary situation where I found out that someone had remote access to my computer while it was in sleep mode. I have the setting that requires a password to wake it up, so luckily they couldn't fully log in. However, I'm worried about what they might still be able to do without logging in. Is my computer at risk of harm in this state?

It's good you caught that! In your case, it sounds more like a misfire than a true hack. Things like Windows updates can sometimes cause weird behavior when waking up, so it might not be a hacker after all. But it’s definitely alarming! Keeping an eye on your system is smart.

I get that, but I actually saw some strange characters popping up when I was entering my password. That made me think someone was messing around!

If you're worried about potential remote access, I recommend unplugging your computer from the internet right away, then rebooting it. After that, change your passwords and sign out of any sessions. Once you plug back in, keep an eye on any strange activity.
