Hey everyone! I've recently got my hands on a MacBook Pro A1278, and I've been dealing with some overheating issues that led to it breaking down. I'm planning to fix it by swapping out the SSD, and I'm torn between reinstalling the existing OS or setting up a dual boot with Windows and Linux, given that I already use Linux on another laptop. I'm even curious about the possibility of having all three operating systems running on my MacBook. I've spoken with some techs, and they claim that it won't work. Has anyone here successfully set up multiple OSs on a MacBook? Looking forward to your insights! Thanks!

If it's a 2012 model, you're in luck—it's Intel-based, so both Windows and Linux should work without a hitch. I've dual-booted Windows and macOS in the past without any issues. Just a heads-up though, I've never tried adding a third OS, so that could be a challenge.
I had Windows 10 running on an older MacBook Air with an Intel i7, and while it worked, it did get super hot. My experience wasn't the best for keeping temps down, so keep that in mind if you go that route!
Lol, yeah, overheating isn’t fun! I totally feel you on that one.
I heard from a few sources that you can definitely run Windows or Linux on Intel Macs! If you're not keen on sticking with the current macOS, you could consider using OpenCore to update to the latest version of macOS first. It might be worth exploring that option before you dive into dual-booting with Windows or Linux. Since macOS is Unix-based, it might actually cover a lot of what you need from Linux—especially for development work! Just my two cents, but you can always switch things up later when you’re ready.
Thanks for the tip! I really appreciate any advice on making the best use of my Mac's setup.
Got it! Definitely looking forward to trying it out once I fix the SSD.
